The concept for the popular TV series The Vampire Diaries is based off a book series by the same name.

The first book, The Awakening, introduces Elena Gilbert. She is a popular student in Fell’s Churh, Virgina. Her friends are Meredith, Bonnie, and Matt. Senior year begins and a new student comes to town, Stefan, and Elena starts dating him. Eventually, she discovers his secret, that he is a vampire. The show follows the same general plot as the book does, with some subtle differences. (Buy the book here)

The Struggle starts where The Awakening left off. It goes further into Damon’s attempt to win over Elena and Stefan’s struggle against his brother. Stefan is almost killed by his brother, but Elena and Bonnie save him. Elena also drinks some of Damon’s drugs. (Buy the book here)

The Fury picks up after the shocking end of The Struggle. Elena has to adjust to her new life and her new found confusion over her hearts desires. Dark Reunion is different because it is told through Bonnie’s point of view instead of Elena. At a birthday party, Bonnie decides to contact Elena using a Ouija board and she warns them there is a dark power in town. (Buy the books here).

In The Return, Elena is alive again. And now she is more than human, she has special powers and her blood is irresistible to any vampire. Stefan will do anything to keep her safe, but Damon wants to use her powers to rule. (Buy the book here)
